why pocket watch is now neglected in this forum? Is this the phenomenon also in the real world?

i don't think so, just people with knowledge and experiences don't share with others as much as they did before, (it may be the problem with the forum itself) i think

also considering the value of talking pocket watches, it loses its shining comparing to the wristwatches.

I''m not ignoring it (well, you guys know I collect pocket watches). The unfortunate fact is that most people "collect" watches for the fashion statement, the glamour, the prestige, but not for the love and understanding of it. So I wouldn''t call these people "collectors", but merely watch owners with a slight interest in it. There are those who genuinely love watches, but feels vintage watches, and even more so for pocket watches, are deficient in certain functions (like water resistance) that would make them unsuitable for daily wear and thus less appealing. But what most faux "collectors" don''t realize is that you have to draw the line when it comes to what is "collectible" and "functional". You can buy a really nice and expensive Patek Phillippe for daily wear but it won''t be necessarily collectible, unless you''ve kept it in good running order for 40 years or longer. So for me pocket watches are definitely the most interesting since a watch existed in this form for more than 350 years, where wristwatches only occupy a small fraction in the history of "watches".

well, it is something about this world, more realistic or something.

i love pocket watches more than wrist ones. But you see, first i am a female. it's quite unnatural for a female to carry a very large watch. Besides, sometimes i don't even have a pocket.

actually my second watch is a pocket one, China made. i hung it as a necklace. You can't imagine how many people asked me whether it was some new sort of mobile phone. How dissappointing it is. And eventually i broke it because no one taught me not to adjust the date after 9:00 at night. And the date is never correct now.

i tend to collect more pocket watches. however you see, watch collection is money consuming and i am only an ordinary person among those who wears SWATCH as the best watches.

What's more, my husband hates watches now, because i broke the watch he bought for me. It is quartz,so i didn't bother to fix it. And he gets really angry. He bought the pocket watch for me and i broke it again. That's the end of it.

The above writer has right starting for "watch collecting".keep going on please,then you will have more stories to tell.this is the fun for collectors.people collect watches for different purpose: some for money,some for fun,some for performance to others,some for its culture and its history.anyway,no matter who they are,they are part of this world.people should respect each other.because that is reality and life.

Maybe people aren't interested in pocket watches simply because they are too heavy.It's true that most pocket watches are bigger and heavier than wrist watches(it's said that the Patek Philippe's Cal.89 is over 1000 grams weight!)

No matter what people say,I always love pocket watches as well as wrist ones.This one really interests me: Marie-Antoinette watch made by breguet,which is considered the most mysterious watch in the world(it was stolen from a museum many years ago).

I think jey66 makes a good point about the practicality issue that pocket watches have disadvantageous to wristwatches.  Pocket watches are remnants of a bygone era, although still functional, few will ever carry one with them.  Especially when you consider that you have to fix up a near-100 year old watch just to lug it around like a piece of brick in your pocket.  For timekeeping nowadays wristwatch is certainly the overwhelming choice.  However, many people own more than 5-10 pieces of watches in which their rationale for having so many watches that cost in the thousands, maybe tens of thousands is that they 'collect' watches.  But if you look at the really serious collectors of watches that nearly every single one of them is a pocket watch collector (but certainly wristwatches too).  So I say usually people just scratch the surface in terms of any issue, and since we are quite the amature forum for watch discussion here it's hard to imagine the really hardcore paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a broken watch watch.  Marie Antoinette watch is certainly a fine example!

I totally agree with you regarding the functionality of wristwatches over pocket watches.  Heck, that's how pocket watches got phased out in the first place.  However, have you ever considered the watch trend we have going on right now of having the mechanical watches at the highest price points vs. lower prices for the quartz watches.  That trend is certainly not the result of functionality superiority.  The people that are really into collecting watches mostly collect pocket watches, you're really talking about 500 year of history to 80 years, it's just no comparison if you are collecting.  I'd say most of the people cannot really call owning a couple of expensive and trendy watches a 'collection', it's merely a bunch of toys to enjoy, nothing really serious if you compare to pocket watch collector that have hundreds of pieces of antique watches plus all of the other material and research that goes into becoming a true watch collector.
